Americo Texeira, 89, of Berlin, died Wednesday, December 9, 2020 after a few years of dementia and a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Arlene (Coute) Texeira.
Americo was born on the island of Sao Miguel, Azores, the eldest son of Manuel and Maria Teixeira.
He began work on his father’s farm at the age of three continuing throughout his childhood. He served in the Army in Portugal, then moved to northern Canada to work on building railroads. At twenty one, he was introduced to Arlene, they married, and he moved to her family home in Berlin.
Americo worked hard to learn English, building on his grammar school and home school education from Portugal. With that base, Arlene’s help, a good mind for mechanics, mathematics, and a lot of hard work, he built a career in road construction, specializing in bridges, and eventually managing large projects as superintendent of bridge construction in Massachusetts from Lee to Cape Cod.
Americo could build or repair almost anything from electrical, to plumbing, woodworking, saw sharpening, auto mechanics and more.
Americo’s hobbies included boating, fishing, gardening, and flying his 2 seater airplane “Charlie Yankee.”
He is survived by his son, Wayne Texeira and his partner Clifton LaPorte, his daughter, Brenda Miskinis and her husband Michael, his sister, Gilda Machado, sister-in-law Carolyn Mariani and her husband Richard, brother-in-law Robert Walsh, and cherished nephews, Timothy, Michael, Brian, David, and their families. He was brother to the late Leontina Medeiros, Abel Teixeira, Ilda Carvalho, and Leonilde Carvalho.
Due to Covid restrictions, there will be a private wake for immediate family at Slattery Funeral Home, Inc., 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough, MA, as well as a private Mass at St. Joseph the Good Provider, 52 West St, Berlin, MA.
He will be laid to rest at North Cemetery, Highland St., Berlin, MA.
