Edward John Butkiewicz Obituary

Edward John Butkiewicz, 84, a dedicated educator and public servant, passed away on April 24, 2026, following a courageous battle with health challenges. Throughout his struggle, Ed maintained his trademark sense of humor and a spirit that never wavered.

Born and raised in Glen Lyon, Pennsylvania, Ed was a proud graduate of Newport Township High School. Following graduation, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge, he continued his service to the nation through a long and distinguished career with the United States government in Germany.

After returning to the United States, Ed dedicated himself to his education, attending Luzerne County Community College and Wilkes University, as well as completing coursework at Pennsylvania State University’s Lehman Campus.

He served as an educator for 30 years within the Greater Nanticoke Area School District. He also served his community with distinction as both a Councilman and the Mayor of Nanticoke City, where he was a tireless advocate for the disadvantaged.

Ed was a lifelong animal lover and protector. Over the years, he rescued many dogs, each of whom occupied a special place in his heart. Most recently, he found great joy and laughter in the company of his two English Springer Spaniels, Gypsy and Chloe.

Ed’s greatest pride was his family. He shared 59 cherished years of marriage with his wife, Audrey Ann (Grebeck) Butkiewicz. He was the devoted father of Leah (Christopher) Amato and Lynann (Edward) Dunn. He was also the proud grandfather of Dominic and Gabrielle Amato, and Nadia and Mackenzie Dunn.

He is further survived by his dear friends, including Reid and Jennifer Davenport, Scott Torr, Vita and Joseph Murray, and Frank and Diane Shaulis.

Edward was laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery in Marlborough. A Memorial Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception in Marlborough, Massachusetts on June 15th at 10:30am. The family wishes to thank the Slattery Funeral Home for their kindness and guidance during this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Edward's honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
