Janet A. (Slamin) Cross Obituary
Janet Alice (Slamin) Cross, 91, of Marlborough, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2025, at the Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence in Wayland with her three daughters lovingly by her side.
Born in Boston and raised in Watertown, Massachusetts, Janet was the daughter of the late Leo F. and Amanda (Sevigny) Slamin. She was the devoted wife of Mark J. Cross for 62 wonderful years until his passing in 2021.
Janet was predeceased by her sister Norma (Slamin) and brother-in-law Silas Hayden, and her brothers Leo F. Slamin, Jr. and Robert Slamin, as well as sister-in-law Judith (Harbester) Slamin. She leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.
Janet is survived by her three daughters: Susan Hett and her husband Eric of York, Maine, Marcia Cross and her husband Tom Mahoney of Los Angeles, California, and Ellen Cross and her husband Andrew Finton of Watertown, Massachusetts.
She was a cherished grandmother to Amanda, Laura, Jared, Natalie, Lillian, Savannah, and Eden, and a joyful great-grandmother to Lucy and Gavin, who brought immeasurable happiness to her final years.
A proud graduate of Watertown High School and Framingham State Teachers College, Janet went on to earn her Master’s in Teaching from Boston College in 1960. Her passion for education and children shaped her long career as a dedicated public school teacher in Newton and later in the Marlborough Public Schools, where she taught for many years until her retirement in 1996.
In 2019, Janet and Mark moved to New Horizons at Marlborough, an independent living community where she formed deep friendships and enjoyed a full life of theater outings, Mahjong games, and shared laughter. Though she never played herself, she was an avid tennis fan and rarely missed a match featuring her favorites.
Family was everything to Janet. Her gentle spirit, warm smile, and deep love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will be treasured always. She also shared a special lifelong friendship with Joan Bucher of Marlborough, a bond she held close to her heart.
In her last years she spent much time in awe thanking God for her wonderful sons-in law, her lifetime of good health, and giving extra thanks for her husband Mark’s
pursuit of her hand in marriage and the beautiful life that they shared.
