Jean Marie Burger passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026 at home in Sudbury MA after a loving and fulfilling life of 101 years. Jean was born in New York, NY on April4, 1925 to Edwin Joseph Devine and Gertrude Marie (Crosby) Devine.  She grew up in Woodridge NJ with her sister Miriam, brothers Edwin and John, and good friends in their DeSalaHack club. The family moved to Parkchester in The Bronx NY in 1940.  Jean graduated from Cathedral High School in Manhattan.  

She met her husband William Reinhold Burger while both worked at the NY Daily News, wed in 1955 and enjoyed a loving 57-year marriage. They raised two sons, William A. and John E. Burger in Parkchester. Jean moved to Foxwood in Pleasantville NY in 1978 with her husband, and then to Massachusetts in 2025 to be closer to her sons. She was a faithful parishioner at St. Raymond’s in The Bronx and Holy Innocents in Pleasantville.

Jean came from a long line of Irish Catholic New Yorkers, loving life in the city and speaking her mind. She was a determined and independent wife, mother and grandmother who loved and cared for her family. Jean was an engaging conversationalist, able to talk with everyone, putting people at ease with her interest in them and with humor. She and her husband enjoyed playing tennis, going to the US Open each year, visiting her retired parents in the Big V in Florida, traveling around the US and the world, and going to the theater and museums in New York and London. Jean was an avid reader, including pouring through the NY Times every day for 70 years. She enjoyed cooking and baking special food for her family.

Jean is survived by her brother John, sons Bill and John, daughters-in-law Lynn and Jen, grandsons Matt and Ben and his wife Marie, many nieces and nephews, and great granddaughter Ava Jean, who brought great joy to Jean in her last two years.  

Visitation will be at Slattery Funeral Home in Marlborough MA on Sunday, April 19, 2026, from 1pm to 3pm. A Funeral Mass and luncheon will be celebrated on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 10:00am at the Holy Innocents Church, 431 Bedford Rd, Pleasantville, NY 10570.
