Joseph M. Byra, 102, of Marlborough, died Saturday, October 26, 2024, at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham after a long illness.  

He was the son of the late Antoni and Aniela (Klecha) Byra and husband of the late Mary (Conti) Byra, to whom he was married 77 years until her death in 2022. He was predeceased by his son, Joey Byra who passed away in 2008, his brother, Mike, and his sisters, Helen Grande, Wanda Stupik and Cecilia Chiras. 

Joseph is survived by his sister, Mickey Grasso, daughter-in-law, Ilona Byra, two grandchildren, Nicholas Byra and Samantha Longval, and many nieces and nephews.

"Joe" was born in Marlborough and attended Marlborough schools through high school.  At an early age, he worked at the Diamond Shoe in Marlborough. He was a successful carpenter who built three homes during his lifetime for himself and family.  He also worked for 40 years for Commonwealth Gas. 

Joe loved to play golf and spent many days at local golf courses.  He especially enjoyed golfing with his son Joey.  He also enjoyed going to the race track and betting on the dogs or horses.  He spent hours studying his sheets before placing his bets. He loved music and taught himself how to play the accordion, the violin, and the harmonica, and was quite talented with each instrument. Joe was a great ballroom dancer and loved to dance.  

Most importantly, Joe loved his family and was always there for all of them.  He was the epitome of a perfect husband, dad, brother, grandfather and uncle.  He will be missed and remembered by all. 

Visiting hour will be held for Joseph, Friday, November 1, 2024, from 10:00-11:00AM at the Slattery Funeral Home, Inc., 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough, MA 01752. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 11:00AM. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Wilson St., Marlborough.
