Rose Elwood Obituary

Rose “Marie” (Carver) Elwood, daughter of the late Basil O. and Jennie E. (Garello) Carver and the beloved wife of the late Morgan M. Elwood, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2021 at the wonderful age of 92. A life long resident of Marlborough, Marie leaves behind her son, Raymond Elwood of Marlborough, her  daughter, Jeanne Whitney and her husband Christopher of Needham, her brother Robert Carver of Marlborough and her sister- in- law Pearl Carver Travis, of Merrimac, MA. She was also blessed with 4 grandchildren: Jason Elwood (wife Kristi); Raymond Elwood Jr.; Ashley Whitney Shea (husband Dan); and Emily Whitney Hazzard (husband Sean) as well as 4 great grandchildren: Kaili, Gabriel, Reese and Keira. She was also the sister of the late Donald Carver, sister- in- law of the late Carol Carver and a large extended family, who loved her dearly.

Marie was a 1947 graduate of Marlborough High School and received her nursing degree in 1950 from St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing in Worcester, MA where she was recognized with the Mother Mary of Providence award for the best bedside manner. As a dedicated nurse, working at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston in the early 50’s followed by 35 years at the Marlborough Hospital, Marie cared for many and was loved by all who knew her.

She married her beloved husband, Morgan in June of 1953. They started a family in 1954 with the birth of their son, Raymond, followed closely by the birth of their daughter, Jeanne, in1955. Morgan contracted polio in August of 1955, prior to the discovery of the polio vaccine. With amazing strength and perseverance, and against all odds, Marie nursed Morgan back to health while raising 2 small children and continuing her nursing job at Marlborough Hospital. Her family offered help and support along the way for which Marie was extremely grateful.

After her retirement in the early ‘90s, Marie became an active member of the Marlborough community, holding a seat on the Marlborough Council on Aging’s Board. She loved vacationing on Cape Cod with her family and traveling the world with Morgan, prior to his passing in 2010. She always enjoyed spending time with family and friends, loved the holidays and special family events, and was always up for a good meal and sharing stories about her life, often times saying, “Everything happens for a reason and it will all work out for the best. The key is to just stay positive and say a prayer.” She will be deeply missed by her family and friends and her loving and caring spirit will stay forever in our hearts.

Private services will be held at Slattery Funeral Home www.slatteryfuneralhome.com followed by burial at the Evergreen Cemetery on Friday, February 5, 2021. A memorial Mass and celebration of Marie’s life will take place when it is safe for loved ones to gather.
