Estelle was born on July 23, 1930 in Pawtucket RI. Her parents were Albani and Fabiola (Marcotte) Plante. She was one of eight children: Henry, Therese (Hood), Helene (Courtemanche), Maurice, and Jeannette (Brunelle) who predeceased Estelle, and Robert and Dolores. The Plantes were fervent members of Our Lady of Consolation Church. The children attended the parish school with the Sisters of Saint Chretienne. As a teenager, Estelle answered God’s call and entered the Sisters’ congregation in 1947 in Quebec. After she professed her vows, she was missioned to teach in grades 3-6 in Rumford ME and in at St. Chretienne Academy in Salem MA where she later taught in the high school.
In 1971, Estelle embarked on a new mission in Florida at Tampa Catholic High School where she was a member of the Guidance Department. During her fifteen years at Tampa Catholic, she accompanied three youth groups on service trips to Appalachia in Kentucky. Later on, she did youth ministry in a parish setting. From 1992 -1999, Estelle was on the team at the Sisters’ spiritual center, Nazareth, in Newport RI. She offeredspiritual direction and welcomed guests seeking quality time with God.
From 1999 to 2003, Estelle moved back to Pawtucket where she volunteered at St. Francis Chapel with the Franciscan Friars. There she was a cheerful presence for the visitors. In 2003, Sr. Estelle moved to the Sisters’ retirement community in Marlboro where she was a driver and receptionist. Her Sisters highlighted her beautiful qualities: her gentle, kind and friendly outreach to everyone, her prayerfulness and delight in God’s creation.
In 2019, with advancing age and declining health, Sr. Estelle was admitted to Bethany Healthcare Center, a residence of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Framingham MA. There also she participated fully inactivities, especially the singing that she so loved.
In her last days on earth, Estelle kept expressing her gratitude for the smallest of kindnesses done for her. Surely her Beloved Lord has welcomed her Home with the words on our profession cross: “Come, blessed of my Father”… Estelle, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from all eternity!
